Wayne Hotchkiss Obituary

Surrounded by his family, at his home in rural New York Mills, Wayne Morris Hotchkiss concluded a life well lived on September 18th, 2025.

Born February 7, 1940, in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the son of Willis Roscoe and Caroline Viola Hotchkiss, Wayne attended Spirit Lake High School and graduated from Sunnyvale High School, California, in 1958. A lifelong lover of education, Wayne proudly obtained his bachelor’s degree in his early 50s.

On September 17th, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Leona Leesch, in Reno, Nevada. They commemorated their 65th wedding anniversary the day before his death. He refused to leave Carol before celebrating this special occasion. Knowing these two would be great parents, God blessed them with four children.

Wayne started working for the United States Postal Service in 1958. He spent 17 years delivering mail in Fargo, North Dakota. He retired from the postal service in 1975. He loved music and passed this love on to his children and grandchildren.

Wayne found solace and joy in the simplicity of nature. He was strong-willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and a wonderful sense of humor. He was clever and full of knowledge gained through his life experiences. He will be remembered for all the heart he shared with his friends and family. He nurtured his family with a steadfast presence. His legacy is one of laughter, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones. He loved nothing more than spending time with his adult children. He was always there for them, offering support and encouragement. However, he was happiest when with his grandchildren. He truly loved his people-and if you knew him, you knew it.

As we bid farewell to Wayne, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest. His memory will continue to inspire us to embrace each day with joy, to cherish our time with family, and to face life's challenges with a smile. Though he has taken his final journey from this world, his spirit will forever soar in the hearts of those who loved him.

Wayne’s loving spirit will be carried on by his wife, Carol; his children, Pamela (Todd) Fosse, Wayne Richard Hotchkiss, Shanna (Tim) Dettwiler, David (Kelly) Hotchkiss and his grandchildren Amber (Ryan) Todd, Brinn (Bryce) Korver, Ayden Fosse, Jamie, Wade (Victoria), and Devin (Uselman) Hotchkiss, Parisha (Brian) Benson, Cortney (Matthew) Quanbeck, Landon, Liam, and Lucas Hotchkiss, great grandchildren, Lake and Ledger Todd, Adrian, Tristan, and Veronica Spies, Baby Korver, Jessie James, Jonathan Riley, Jayla, Jayden, Jalisha, Aurora Hotchkiss, Broden, Brayden, Blayten, Brekken, and Bryson Benson, Aleithia, Selah, Ezra, Jubilee, and Shiloh Quanbeck, sister and brother in law, Marshall and Leanne Magincalda, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends, whose lives were greatly enriched by his presence.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law, Wynoma Elaine Leesch, his Father-in-law, Walter Carl Leesch, two brothers, Willis Rodney and Gayle Stewart, and his Granddaughter, Chelsea Lynne Fosse (Grandpa’s Bug), who we know was there to welcome him with hugs at Heaven’s gate.

His canine companions were also dear to him. Perp and Daisy have stayed behind with Carol, but Pro, Cinder, Tinker, and Taffy are on a long walk with him now.

Dad, your guiding hand on our shoulders will remain with us forever.

You may have left this world, but your legacy of love will always remain and continue to inspire and guide us. We are grateful to call you our father, and our hearts are full because of you. As we grapple with the loss of your physical presence, we find comfort in the memories and everlasting love you instilled in us.

In typical Wayne fashion, there are no funeral services planned, certainly no pomp and circumstance. Wayne's life will be commemorated with a celebration of life, where family and friends will gather to share stories, laughter, and tears, honoring a man who was truly one of a kind. Please join us on Saturday, September 27th, from 1-3 pm at Blowers Chapel, Sebeka, MN. His departure from this world leaves a void that can never be filled, but the love and memories he created will be treasured forever.

Rest in peace, Dad, until we meet again.
