Vern Missling Obituary

Vernelle (Vern) Raymond Missling, was born on January 24, 1945 to Raymond (Ray) and Mavis (Polzin) Missling at the Wesley Hospital in Wadena.  He was raised and worked hard on the family farm near Hewitt and graduated from Bertha-Hewitt High School with the class of 1962.  After high school Vern moved to Minneapolis and began working at Hitchcock Industries.  He met his forever love, Linda (King) at Furley's in Hewitt and they were united into marriage on April 15, 1967.  Their union was blessed with three children Angi, Dina, and Tony.  They initially made their home in Bloomington, Minnesota and shortly after, purchased their first house in Rosemont, Minnesota.  Vern was born a farmer and did not like the thought of raising their kids in the city so they began looking for a farm back closer to home.   They settled on a dairy farm south of Deer Creek in 1972 and raised their family there. While putting in long work days farming, Vern also sold seed corn and was a member of the Deer Creek school board.  He would also make time to get together to play his guitar for barn dances, local gatherings and jam sessions with the "Pickers & the Grinners".  After the kids were grown and left the farm, Vern retired from dairy farming in 1989 and started driving forklift for Timberoots sawmill in Wadena.  Vern and Linda moved to Menahga in 2000 when Vern took over managing and doing maintenance at the turkey farm.  and he continued working for Jennie-o until he retired in 2017.  He could fix just about anything, and he was proud to be known for the hard work he put in throughout his life.

Vern loved living in the country amongst the pines and he and Linda enjoyed camping and canoeing along the Crow Wing and Shell rivers and cruising the back roads and trails for grouse and deer.  He loved to go deer hunting with his family and many crazy stories were told and re-told again over the years.  He loved listening to music, particularly old country music and made many fun memories playing guitar with his good friends, Marlowe, Charlie, Red and his brother Bob.   He enjoyed feeding the birds, watching NASCAR on TV and if his TV wasn't tuned in to watch a MN sports team, or the news, it would be on Gunsmoke.  He also enjoyed taking a drive into town every morning to get the paper and would read it from cover to cover.

Vern was hardworking and had a fun, mischievous sense of humor and loved most all the time he got to spend with his kids and grandkids. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Vern is preceded in death by his parents and father and mother-in-law: Gordon and Mabel (Tiny) King; infant daughter: Dina Missling; wife: Linda Missling; brother Robert Missling; brother-in-law Ronald Grewe.

Vern will be missed by his children Angela (Clay) Moser and Tony (Kim) Missling; grandchildren Chandler, Lily and Carter Moser, Madisyn and Ella Missling; great-grandson Tyr Benedict; Sisters Janice (Marvin) Larson and Karen Grewe; sisters-in-law Connie Missling and Mary King; nieces and nephews Mavis Kurkowski, Timothy Larson, Teresa Hagene, Brenda Evans, Mark Grewe, and Joel Grewe.
