Thelma Hintz

A private internment service will be held for Thelma Myrtle Hintz, age 103, of Osceola, Wisconsin on Saturday, July 13th in Greenwood Cemetery in New York Mills, MN. Thelma passed away peacefully at the Christian Community Home in Osceola, Wisconsin on November 27, 2018. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sharon Kangas and stepson Roger Hintz.

Internment service will also take place at this time for Thelma’s son, Stephen Kangas, who passed away in 2006.

Thelma Myrtle Anden was born on June 24, 1915 in Dawson, Minnesota to Thomas and Clara.  She attended Mankato Teachers college prior to her marriage to Rudy Kangas and they had one son, Stephen.  Rudy and Thelma owned the bottling works in New York Mills, Minnesota. Thelma continued to operate the business when Rudy was in the service.  She sold the business to Ohman brothers after Rudy’s death.

She married Lionel Hintz in 1958 and after a couple years in New York Mills, moved to Richfield, MN where she did substitute teaching.  Lionel and Thelma purchased property on the St. Croix known as Cedar Bend Trout Farm, from which they operated a trout fishing business.  After Lionel’s death in 1971, Thelma stayed on the river for another 37 years.

After Stephen’s death, Thelma and her daughter-in-law, Sharon, continued to operate the trout farm and lived there until 2008.

Thelma chose to live in Osceola, WI after leaving the trout farm.  Thelma passed away November 27, 2018 at the Christian Community Home in Osceola, Wisconsin.  She was 103 years, 5 months and 3 days old.

She liked to read, enjoyed travel and cross word puzzles, watching fox, bear, wild turkeys, turtles, blue heron and other wildlife from her porch on the river.  She enjoyed bridge, lunches with teacher friends, and was proud of the growth of Scandia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband’s Rudy Kangas and Lionel Hintz, her brother Artie, her son Stephen, her daughter-in-law Karen Hintz and step grandson Scott Noleen.

She is survived by stepson Roger (Shellee) Hintz, and daughter-in-law Sharon Kangas, two grandchildren, Andrea Hintz and Nathan Hintz and great grandchildren Carter Barnes and Ethan and Lauren Hintz.

She was a long-time member of Elim Lutheran Church in Scandia.  Memorials preferred to Elim.

STEPHEN KANGAS

Stephen Henry Kangas was born October 1st, 1942 in Wadena, Minnesota to Thelma and Rudy Kangas.  He graduated from New York Mills high school and attended Suomi College in Hancock, Michigan.

In 1968 he began work in the traffic department at Northrup King in Minneapolis.  Northrup King relocated their operations in 1986 and Steve then began working for Rubenstein Logistics in Golden Valley, Minnesota.

In 1967, he married Sharon Noleen.  They lived in Minneapolis for a few years prior to moving to the trout farm in Scandia, Minnesota that Thelma and Lionel had purchased in 1969.  He and Sharon continued to operate the farm with Thelma after Lionel passed away in 1971.  He lived there until his death in 2006.  Steve lost his stepson, Scott, in a tragic traffic accident in December of 1981.

He enjoyed playing golf in his spare time and projects around the farm along with the serenity of the location on the bank of the St. Croix river.  He didn’t seem to mind the long commute to and from Golden Valley each day.

Stephen will be buried with Thelma next to his father in Greenwood Cemetery in New York Mills, Minnesota.
