Steven "Steve" Johnson Obituary

Steve Johnson, age 65, of Wadena, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Steve was born on October 23, 1959, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, the son of Ray and Margaret (Willette) Johnson. He grew up alongside his brothers, Dan, Keith, and Brian.

On October 8, 1992, while enjoying an evening of karaoke, Steve met the love of his life, Kim. The two were united in marriage on July 20, 1996, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wadena. Their marriage grew stronger with every passing year. Kim fondly shares that “for the last five years it seemed like we were just dating” which is a testament to the joy and love they shared through traveling, laughter, and time with family. Together, Steve and Kim made countless memories exploring new places like Mexico’s beaches, Florida’s sunshine, the rolling beauty of the Black Hills, and the many old west towns scattered through them. Traveling was one of their greatest joys, and every trip deepened their bond. He was a hopeless romantic, a devoted husband, and a gentleman through and through, never failing to buckle and unbuckle Kim’s seatbelt for her.

Whether fishing, hunting, being with his mother at the lake, or simply taking in nature’s peace, he was happiest in the great outdoors. He proudly held a personal best 46¼-inch northern that he caught this past March. His favorite hunting and fishing buddy, was his son, Jake.

Steve was also known for helping out whenever needed. He loved helping his daughter Brooke and the WDC softball team, doing work at the field, often before being asked. His kindness and compassion extended to everyone he met. His family and friends will remember him as thoughtful, generous, and always willing to lend a hand.

His daughter Brittany remembers him often saying “There are no bad days. Any day you can get out of bed, is a good one” There wasn’t a day that passed without him bragging about his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by his wife and best friend of 33 years, Kim Johnson of Wadena; his daughters Brittany Umland (Evan), and Brooke Umland of Wadena, and his son Jacob (Ashley) Johnson of Fargo; his cherished grandchildren, Xander, Jaxson, Noah, and Lexi Umland, and Eli Johnson. His “golden retriever grandchildren” Bailey and Gracie; his beloved mother, Margaret Johnson of Lake Park; his brothers Dan Johnson of Fargo, Keith (Jane) Johnson of Moorhead, and Brian (Shawn) Johnson of Fargo; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Johnson; his in-laws, Merv and Lorraine Umland; his infant child, Jamie (1999); and his faithful four legged companion, Gabby.

We can only imagine what the neighbors will think now that their lawns won’t be mysteriously mowed by the hands of Steve Johnson. May he rest in peace, surrounded by open water, tall trees, and those he loves most.

In honor of Steve’s life, the family encourages visitors to wear a touch of camouflage to the visitation and his celebration of life.
