Shirley Kern

Shirley Mae Hines was born on April 4, 1944 in Verndale, Minnesota.  Her parents were the late Carl and Viola (Payne) Hines.  Shirley graduated from the Verndale High School with the class of 1962.  After high school Shirley worked at the Verndale Café where she met the love of her life, Mark Kern.

On October 26, 1963 Shirley and Mark were united in marriage at St. Hubert Catholic Church in Blue Grass, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with 4 children. Together, they raised their children and enjoyed working hand in hand on the family farm in Blue Grass.

Shirley operated Shirley’s Upholstery out of her home for 30 years and also worked for Willis Rubber Company for 20 years.  Mark passed away on June 10, 2017. Shirley enjoyed gardening, flowers and crafts.

On March 16, 2021 Shirley passed away at her home in Verndale at 76 years of age. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Viola Hines ; husband: Mark Kern; brother, Carl Hines; sister-in-law, Zona Hines

Shirley is survived by her children: Duane Kern of Blue Grass; Dean (Kristi) Kern of New York Mills; Virginia Gapinski of Litchfield; and Rachell (Nick) Willis of Verndale; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; siblings: Art (Cathy) Hines of Omaha; Diana Tjaden of Fergus Falls; Dale Hines of Motley; Marcia (Cecil) Colvin of Sierra Vista, AZ ; many other relatives and a host of friends.
