Samuel “Sam” Waln was born on July 13, 1995, in Wadena, Minnesota, to Timothy and Sandra (Shiek) Waln. He was baptized at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Wadena and graduated with the Wadena High School Class of 2013. During his school years, Sam was a dedicated wrestler, competing in numerous tournaments and showcasing his strength and determination.
Sam held various jobs over the years, often working alongside his father, but his favorite role was at Baranof Lodge in Alaska, where he found joy and purpose in the great outdoors.
Above all, Sam cherished his son, Kassen. He treasured every moment they shared and was a devoted and loving father. Sam also had a deep bond with each of his siblings and a special connection with his nephew, Kyler.
An avid outdoorsman, Sam found peace and happiness in nature. He loved fishing, bow hunting, birdwatching, and tending to gardens and wildflowers. He was also a talented cook who delighted in preparing meals for family and friends. Known for his curiosity, Sam was always tinkering with things—though he didn’t always put them back together.
In recent years, Sam faced profound personal struggles. Yet, these challenges do not define the beautiful life he lived or the love he gave so freely. His journey was marked by courage, and he will be remembered with deep love, compassion, and admiration.
Sam was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Joyce Shiek; great-grandparents, Samuel and Laura Waln; great-grandparents, Irvin and Esther Weappa; and cousin Jeremy Shiek.
He is deeply loved and will be forever missed by his parents: TJ (Kate) Waln and Sandy (Eric Rossberg) Shiek; his beloved son, Kassen Paul Waln; his siblings: Jake (Emily) Waln, Hunter Waln, Katrina Waln, Wayne Ball, Jayden Ball, and Leith Ball; grandparents: Shirley Shiek, Ed and Joy Waln and Robert and Maria Miner; his nephew, Kyler; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Sam passed away at the age of 30 on July 16, 2025, in Sebeka, Minnesota.
