Robert Arthur Dietrich, age 81, passed away peacefully at his lake cabin in Perham, Minnesota, surrounded by family on February 5, 2026. Born on July 31, 1944, in Verona, North Dakota, Robert grew up with the values that would guide him throughout his life—hard work, humility, devotion to family, and a deep respect for the land.
Robert attended school in Verona before beginning a lifetime of farming, raising small grains, tending beef cattle, and milking dairy cows. He loved every part of farm life.
He proudly served in the Army National Guard, carrying with him a sense of duty and service that shaped his character and the example he set for his family.
Away from the farm, Robert cherished the peaceful solitude of his lake cabin, a place where he found rest and reflection. He and his wife Shirley also spent their winters in Destin, Florida—time he deeply enjoyed and looked forward to each year.
Robert married Shirley Ann Bitz in June of 1967, beginning a partnership marked by laughter, resilience, and unwavering devotion. Their 60 years together were a testament to the life they built side by side.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Shirley and many cherished relatives who welcomed him home.
He is survived by his three children—Rob (Sherri) Dietrich, Jodie Swendseid, and Joleen (Michael) Samson—and his grandchildren, Gillian, Genna, Zackary, and Jasmine, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. His legacy lives on in their stories, their values, and the love he poured into them. Family has chosen to do a private celebration of life.
