Merrill "Mike" Heggestuen Obituary

Merrill “Mike” Allen Heggestuen, born December 28, 1930, in Fordville, ND, to Myron and Alma (Olson) Heggestuen, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2022, in Detroit Lakes, MN. Mike was raised in Oslo, MN, and married his wife of 71 years, Dolores (Larson), of Manvel, ND, in 1951.

They made their home in Fargo, where they raised their children, David of Audubon, MN; Robert (Sarah), Minneapolis; Susan Cain (Dale), Soldotna, AK; and James (Linda) Stillwater, MN.

Mike worked for Bell Telephone and was very active and served as a steward in the Communications Workers of America union for many years before retiring to a hobby farm on Big Floyd Lake in Detroit Lakes. Over the years, Mike made many friends and acquaintances during his daily 11-mile walks - usually with a dog or two in tow. He was also well known for his exceptional sweet corn and collection of (mostly green) tractors and equipment. He often joked that he was out standing in his field.

Mike was friendly, gregarious, and always ready to lend a hand and lighten the load. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Mike is survived by his wife and four children, 14 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and daughter-in-law, Colleen.

A family remembrance will be scheduled for the Spring.
