Melvin Alva Helmrichs was born on July 16, 1934 at home in Deer Creek Township, Minnesota. His parents were the late Alva Herman and Elvira Viola (Macklanburg) Helmrichs. He was baptized on August 19, 1934 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek by E.T. Meichsner. Melvin was confirmed on June 13, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek by Reverend Wm. E. Friedrich. Melvin graduated from the Deer Creek High School with the class of 1952.
On May 31, 1959 Melvin was united in marriage to Mildred “Millie” Hoyhtya at Trinity Lutheran Church in New York Mills, Minnesota by Reverend William Ross. Their marriage was blessed with 3 children. Melvin served honorably in the United States Army from January 1955 to December 1956. Melvin and Millie made their home on the family farm outside of Deer Creek where Melvin farmed. Melvin was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he held many offices. For 36 years, Melvin, was a member of the Deer Creek Township Board and Farmers Coop. Board. Melvin was also a member of the Lions Club and American Legion Post 283 in Deer Creek. In 2007 Melvin and Mildred moved to town.
On December 30, 2018 Melvin passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the St. Cloud Hospital at 84 years of age. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Preceding Melvin in death were his parents, Alva and Elvira.
Melvin is survived by his wife: Mildred; children: Marc (Brenda) Helmrichs of Pequot Lakes; Marcia (Luke) Colleran of Pittston, Pennsylvania; Milo (Laurie) Helmrichs of Rozet, Wyoming; 2 grandchildren: Megan and Katelyn; sister: LaVey (Roland) Thalmann of Ottertail; also many other relatives and a host of friends.
