Marlow Salo

Obituary

Marlow Alfred Salo was born on October 11th, 1934 in Leaf LakeTownship, Otter Tail County, Minnesota to Alfred and Alma (Maunumaki) Salo.  He attended The Prairie Country School  District 160 until the eighth grade. He received an honorary diploma from the New York Mills Public School on May 27th, 2016. 

At the age of seventeen, he began working for the DMIR (Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range) Railway for a short time.  From there he went to the Mariska Mine near Gilbert, Minnesota.

In 1953 he enlisted into the United States Navy and was stationed on the USS Henry W. Tucker DD/DDR 875.  He was honorably discharged in 1957.  Upon returning home to New York Mills he went to work in road construction.

On July 30th, 1960 he was united in marriage to Dorla Ann Bernu at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills.  They purchased a farmstead in Homestead Township and ran a dairy farm from 1962 until 1989.  Marlow also worked for Lund Boats beginning employment on May 14,1963 and worked for 40 plus years.

Marlow enjoyed gardening, deer hunting, fishing, camping, working in the woods, cutting firewood, running a sawmill, watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s activities and sporting events.  He was quite the handyman and he would fix anything. Marlow was an avid Twins fan and loved to watch westerns.  He was a researcher and historian and loved to share this knowledge with his family and friends.  Marlow was happiest when his house was filled with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  He was a Life Member of the Charles D. Center V.F.W. Post #3289.

On April 15th, 2020, Marlow passed away at the Perham Health Hospital, Perham Minnesota at the age of 85.  He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Preceding Marlow in death were his parents Alfred and Alma Salo, Father and Mother-in-law Matt and Esther Bernu, foster brothers Elmer and Milton Makinen, brothers Thomas (Donna) Salo, Gerald Salo, brothers-in-law: David Anderson, Donald (Arlene) Bernu, and Delbert Bernu.  Sister-in-law Dorthy (Rudy) Ranta.

Marlow is survived by his wife Dorla; children Pamela (Rick) Hotakainen; Douglas (Becky) Salo; Dean (Janelle) Salo; Tamara Salo; Kari (Brian) Carlson; 10 grandchildren: Jason (Sara) Hotakainen; Cody (Haley Christensen) Salo; Jared (Kayla) Hotakainen; Wade Salo; Emily (Felix) Wrage; RaeAnna (Tanner) Wegscheid; Taylor (Aleashia) Carlson; Kenna Salo; Bren Salo; Torrey Carlson; Great-grandchildren Sadie, Charlie & Noelle Hotakainen; Layla & Cade Salo; Gage & Remi Hotakainen; Kaia & Brynn Wegscheid; brother Warren (MaryJane) Salo; sister Margie Anderson; brothers-in-law, Darwin (June) Bernu, Duane (Irene) Bernu; sisters-in-law, Joani Salo and Carolyn Bernu; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and many friends.
