Lucillia "Lucy" Buchanan

Lucillia “Lucy” Irene South was born on May 24, 1936 in Longview, Washington.  Her parents were the late Vernon and Evelyn (Irons) South .  Lucy grew up in rural Hewitt and graduated from the Henning High School with the class of 1954.  On March 14, 1954 Lucy was united in marriage with Dean Buchanan  in Bertha, Minnesota. Dean served in the United States Air Force, so Lucy spent time in Duluth, Japan, and California resided in the Wadena-Deer Creek area where she raised her 5 children: Mike, Pam, Vicky, Sandy, and Brenda.   

Lucy owned and operated, Lucy’s Café in Eagle Bend for 2 years and then made her home in Henning where she continued Lucy’s Café for another 25 years.  Lucy enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, and visiting with family and friends.  In 2016 due to a double hip fracture, Lucy resided at the Twin Town Villa in Breckenridge and recently moved to Pioneer Care Center in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. 

On August 31, 2020 Lucy passed away peacefully at Pioneer Care in Fergus Falls, Minnesota at 84 years of age.  She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.  Preceding Lucy in death were her parents: Vernon and Evelyn; stepfather: Thomas Marsh; husband, Dean; son: Mike (June 3, 2020); infant brother: Levoy; sister: Lura; grandchildren: Jesse McManigle and Nicole Buchanan. 

Lucy is survived by her daughters:  Pam (Byron) Boe of Deer Creek; Vicky (Gary) Zuhlsdorf of Hewitt; Sandy (Scott) Meyer of Fairmount, North Dakota; Brenda Anderson of Perham; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother: James South of Albert Lea; many other relatives and a host of friends.
