Loren Gunn Obituary

Loren Gunn was born November 5, 1922, on a farm near Clarissa, MN. He and his twin sister, Lois, when born, weren’t much bigger than their father’s hands. To keep the twins warm, they were put in shoe boxes and set on the oven door. Many of Loren’s experiences growing up revolved around Camp Jim, from getting poison ivy as a boy, to his youth enjoying Camp Jim Club with many friends including a special girl, named Pearl, to honeymooning with Pearl at Camp Jim in Hardee Lake Cabin, to serving on the Camp Jim board for many, many years.

He planned to be enlisted and serve his country, but was told the country needed him more as a farmer than a soldier. So, a farmer he was. After Loren and Pearl’s wedding on October 22, 1943, the couple bought what became the Gunn family farm in Bluffton Township, where they became successful farmers. Together they worked hard on their farm, creating a home that was always welcoming to guests.

Along with Loren’s parents, Loren and Pearl were actively involved in the Green Valley Community Church Sunday School, where Loren said sometimes he had to teach his class in a car, because there was not enough room in the church! He was always very active in his church, and lived his faith seven days a week.

Even when his family was young, Loren’s life was accented by travel, and in later years, he saw the world, visiting his children.

Loren and Pearl moved into their new home in 1983, and he transitioned to helping his son, who took over the family farm.

Loren and Pearl moved to Fair Oaks Assisted Living in 2008, and he lost his beloved wife of 66 years in 2009.

In his later years, his favorite pastime was listening to the Christian radio station, and watching Christian television. He never tired of playing Mexican Train with his friends at Fair Oaks and his family, and recently, with his great-grandchildren.

He served the Lord with gladness, leading home Bible studies, giving wisdom, and showing compassion to his friends and neighbors. He leaves a legacy of a life well-lived and an example of faith in Jesus Christ, love and kindness for all who knew him.

Loren was a prayer warrior for his family, and enjoyed sitting in his chair, looking at pictures of his children and praying every day for them by name, and each of their children by name and their children. He is survived by his 6 children: LaVon Lown (Neil), Don Gunn (Sue), Bonita Nordaas (Arnie), Jerry Gunn (Wendy), Karen Giesbrecht (Dan), and Mardell Kistler (Diz), his 10 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
