Jon Arnold Pohlman, 83, of Wadena, passed away surrounded by his loving wife, Margaret, at Summit Ridge Place in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, under the gentle care of Moments Hospice and the compassionate staff at Summit Ridge.
Jon was born on October 23, 1942, in Windom, Minnesota, the son of Arnold and Helen Marie (Kraft) Pohlman. He graduated with the Lakefield High School Class of 1960. On December 26, 1966, Jon was united in marriage to Margaret Engebretson. Their marriage was blessed with three sons, Robin, Micah, and Jarred.
Jon and Margaret began their life together in Webster and Watertown, South Dakota, then returned to Minnesota where they lived in Windom, Little Falls, and Sherburne before finally settling on their farm in rural Sebeka.
Jon began his working life as a barber and would go on to become a true “Jon-of-all-trades.” Together, Jon and Margaret operated a hotel in Sherburn, which they later converted into apartments. Over the years, Jon worked as an appliance repairman, spent time with Singer sewing machines and Herberger’s Department Store, and ultimately found his calling as a farmer. Farming was where Jon’s heart was, as he had grown up on a farm and cherished the land, the work, and the independence it brought.
Beyond farming, Jon found great fulfillment working with individuals with special needs, often serving as the skilled craftsman behind many woodworking projects. Woodworking remained a constant passion throughout his life. Known for his humor and quick wit, Jon was a natural jokester and brought laughter into every room he entered. He loved fishing with his boys when they were young and famously gave up deer hunting with Margaret because, as Jon would say, “the deer always found us before we found them.” He was especially passionate about waterfowl hunting and took pride in guiding hunting trips on Heron Lake. Jon was also active in his church life, teaching confirmation and helping with odd jobs in the church. A gifted writer and thoughtful communicator, he wrote often, though none of his work was ever formally published.
Those left to honor Jon’s memory include his loving wife, Margaret; his sons, Robin (Sara) Pohlman of Little Falls, Minnesota, Micah Pohlman of Rushmore, Minnesota, and Jarred (Jessica) Pohlman of Clear Lake, South Dakota; and his grandchildren, Kendra (JJ) Cooney of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Kylie Pohlman of Waite Park, Minnesota, and Ava and Adalynn Pohlman of Clear Lake, South Dakota.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Helen Marie Pohlman; his brother, David (Charlotte) Pohlman; his nephew, Kevin Pohlman; and his great-nephew, Cody.
