Jerry Schmidt Obituary

Jerome “Jerry” Clement Schmidt, Sr. was born on July 17, 1927, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Fred and Josephine (Dorn) Schmidt. He was raised on the North End of the city, attending Saint Bernard’s Grade School, and graduated from Cretin High School in 1945. Coming from a musical family, he played in both school bands. Jerry served in the United States Army during WWII, from October 16th, 1945 until January 14th, 1947. He was on active duty in Okinawa, Japan.

When he returned from the Army, he attended the University of Saint Thomas. And on October 2nd, 1948, was united in marriage to Mildred (Millie) Kukas at Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church in Saint Paul.  Their marriage was blessed with three children: Catherine “Cathy”, Christine “Kiki” and Jerome “Jerry”, Jr. 

Jerry was employed for 32+ years as the Chief Clerk in the Mail and Baggage Department of the Saint Paul Union Depot until it closed. He then continued employment with the Burlington Northern Railroad until he retired. Jerry and Millie made Saint Paul their home for many years with brief periods in Cottage Grove and Lake Elmo before retiring to their home on Lake Shamineau, rural Motley, Minnesota. Millie passed away on February 13, 2012. In November of 2017, Jerry made his home in Wadena, Minnesota.

He was an avid collector of stamps, baseball cards, and coins. He enjoyed playing on his keyboard, doing crossword puzzles and scratch off tickets. He was a talented musician and could play various instruments by ear. In his younger days, he was a part of a Barbershop Quartet. He sang in the church choir and various programs with his Father and siblings.

On August 29, 2021, Jerry passed away at Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena at 94 years of age. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Preceding Jerry in death are his parents; beloved wife Millie; daughter Christine; brother William; sister Geraldine Turnquist and special friend Bettie Montpetit.

Surviving Jerry are his children: Catherine Collova of Maplewood; Jerome Schmidt, Jr. (Jeanne) of Wadena; 9 Grandchildren; 8 Great-grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; Siblings; Mary Pingley of Farmington and Fred Schmidt of Cottage Grove; many relatives and friends.
