Gary Ellingson passed away on October 17, 2025, in Menahga, Minnesota. He was born on August 28, 1954, in Granite Falls, Minnesota, to Lyman and Mavis (Thostenson) Ellingson.
Gary graduated from Yellow Medicine East High School in 1972. He went on to build a life rooted in hard work, community, and the outdoors. He married Marge Ritter, and together they shared a life filled with dedication and shared passions.
A lifelong farmer, Gary also worked selling seed at the Hanley Falls Elevator. His deep connection to the land extended beyond his profession—he was an avid gardener who cultivated over 500 varieties of hostas, earning him the affectionate nickname “The Hosta Guy.” His love for gardening was matched by his enthusiasm for lawn care and preserving the fruits of his labor through canning.
Gary found joy in Minnesota’s winters as well, especially through ice fishing and spear fishing. He had a special bond with his dog, Sophie, who was a constant companion. Known for his warm personality and easygoing nature, Gary made friends wherever he went.
Gary is preceded into death by his wife Marge and his parents Lyman and Mavis.
Gary will be mourned by his children: Eric Ellingson, Wayne (Ara) Vance, and Wanda Vance; grandchildren: Corey (Elizabeth) Vance, Easton Vance, and Beau Vance; siblings: Vernon (Karen) Ellingson, Dale (Sue) Ellingson, Toots (Bruce) Tusberg, Bruce (Diana) Ellingson, and Daniel (Linda) Ellingson; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
His presence will be deeply missed by those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all who were touched by his life.
