Edith "Mae" Huttunen Obituary

Edith “Mae” (Juntunen) Huttunen, age 93, of Sebeka, Minnesota (formerly of Wadena, Minnesota), passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Vitality Living of Sebeka under the care of Moments Hospice.

Mae Juntunen was born on May 31, 1932, in Wadena, Minnesota to August and Ina (Putikka) Juntunen. She attended Hay Creek Country School and then graduated from Sebeka High School in 1951. After graduation, she worked at the Co-op Store in Sebeka, where she met Aaro Huttunen.

Mae was united in marriage with Aaro Huttunen on May 18, 1957, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sebeka, MN. They were blessed with two children, Gordon and Mary. The couple dairy farmed until 1989 when they exchanged houses with Gordon and Kelly. Mae also worked for Lake Construction in Sebeka for a little while.

Mae was a dedicated member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sebeka all her life and showed that through her serving the Lord every way she could. She was very active in the Priscilla Guild; you could always find her in the kitchen preparing and serving food for all occasions. Mae was a Sunday School teacher, was part of the church’s prayer chain, and the altar guild.

Mae was proud of her Finnish Heritage and was a member of the Finnish Historical Society of Sebeka. She was a 4-H leader for many years, was in the Merry Makers Homemakers group where she always planned a special meal when it was her turn to have the meeting at her house. Mae was a clerk for Blowers Township after Aaro passed and before that she would look forward to making the town board “a little lunch” for their meetings.

Mae loved feeding people, she looked forward to family gatherings at her house, birthdays, and holidays were her favorites. She was known as a great cook, especially for her many bars, carmel rolls and angel food cake. Mae often made birthday cakes for everyone’s special day. When Mae wasn’t in the kitchen, she would watch the Twins and Wheel of Fortune on TV. She also enjoyed vegetable gardening and had her deck full of flowers.

Mae loved children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made every effort to attend their activities, sports, band concerts, church programs, making their birthday cakes and goodies for their special day. Mae enjoyed talking with them, asking “what was new?” and wondering how the crops were doing. She had a special place in her heart for the daycare kids, she was “Grandma Mae” to all of them. Mae would watch them play outside and visit them at her house while serving them a treat. Two boys, Jeb and Gideon, were very close to her after spending time getting to know them.

Mae was a friendly person who enjoyed talking to all. She was a strong lady, who was a two-time cancer survivor. She will be dearly missed by all that knew her. We were blessed to have her in our lives.

Mae was preceded in death by her husband Aaro, her parents, granddaughter Lynn Marie Huttunen, brother Roy Juntunen, and sister Audrey Juntunen.

Deeply loved, Mae’s passing will be mourned by her son Gordon (Kelly): daughter Mary; grandchildren: Kimberly (Bo) Thurston, Ethan (Kayla) Huttunen, Katelyn (Tanner) Rentz and Evan (Taylor Geiser) Huttunen; great-grandchildren: Holly, Henry, and Hudson Thurston, Nora, Cooper, Ella Mae, and Lyla Huttunen, and Rylie and McKenna Rentz; sister Margie (Ellard) Krohnfeldt; Aunt Anni Putikka; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
