Donald Allen Puttonen, age 79, born May 6, 1945, to Elmer and Irene (Hanninen) Puttonen. Donald celebrated his childhood with his 7 siblings Kenneth, Laverna, Donna (his twin), Ella, Eugene, David, and Dean. Growing up 5 miles west of Sebeka on a beautiful farm. Don was baptized and came to know his Lord at the Laestadian Lutheran Church at the end of his driveway.
Donald grew up working hard and moved on to create his own path at an early age working for local farmers. At the age of 16, Don broke away from farming life to explore an opportunity in the big city. Finding a job at the foundry and dedicating 20 years to this job. Soon after meeting his wife Bonnie (Bakken) they were married on August 21, 1965. Giving the city life a try he made many memories, but he missed the farm.
Don wanting a better way of life, moved back home to Sebeka, he began cultivating the land, herding the cows and growing his family. Don spent over 20 years on that farm raising 9 children and teaching them all the value of hard work, kindness, and “sisu”.
Because of the economy and his declining heath, Don chose a new path as a mechanic working for Barrel of Fun. He retired after 20 years.
During all his days, Don enjoyed hosting large family gatherings and visiting with the neighbors. He spent his time hunting on his farmland and teaching the “city folk” about farming. He celebrated every birth because babies were his favorite. Loved the game of baseball teaching and coaching many. Donald enjoyed every moment he got, dressing up as Santa Clause for his 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, going on numerous horse rides.
Don is reunited in death with his parents, Elmer and Irene Puttonen. Two brothers Kenneth and Dean Puttonen, two of his sisters Laverna Ohlgren and Donna Sarbaum.
Donald is survived by his wife Bonnie Puttonen of 59 years, along with their children Timothy (Sheila), Julia (David) Kicker, Brian, Clifford, Sheila (Daric) Kako, Chris, Melissa, Nick, Jena (Danny) Carkhuff; 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
