Dexter Allen Paulson, age 54, of Wadena, Minnesota (formerly of Park Rapids, Minnesota) passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 28, 2026, in Wadena, surrounded by those he loved.
Dexter was born on March 29, 1971, in Anchorage, Alaska, to Daniel and Susan (Williams) Paulson. At a young age, his family moved to Park Rapids, Minnesota, where he grew up and later graduated from Park Rapids High School with the class of 1989. Following high school, Dexter attended Mayville State University for a short time before answering the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. During his service, he worked as a medic and was stationed in Iraq.
Following his honorable discharge, Dexter continued his passion for helping others by attending Bemidji State University, where he pursued a degree in nursing. On October 10, 1992, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Lynne Whitehead in Lubbock, Texas. She preceded him in death in 2004.
Dexter was one of a kind. He was spunky, straightforward, and never one to sugarcoat anything. If he had something to say, he said it, whether you were ready to hear it or not. Beneath that bold exterior, though, was a deeply caring and generous man. He would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought. He was a strong leader, a dependable boss, and someone people naturally gravitated toward.
He loved the outdoors and felt most at home on the water or in the woods. Fishing, hunting, swimming, and sitting around a bonfire surrounded by friends and family were some of his favorite ways to spend his time. Dexter also enjoyed woodworking, often creating meaningful pieces for those he loved. He will always be remembered for his long arms, his quick wit, and the countless pranks he pulled on coworkers, especially putting things just out of reach. One of the many stories that will live on is the time he pulled a pontoon into shore with one arm, a true testament to his strength and determination.
Dexter had a fiery spirit, a trait he proudly carried from his mother, and a presence that could never be ignored. Though he didn’t always show it openly, he was incredibly nurturing and deeply loved those closest to him.
Those left to honor Dexter’s memory include his adopted son, Pierce; his companion and former fiancée, Jenifer Spencer-Hotakainen and her children who were devoted to him, Lee (MaKayla Cusey) Spencer and Emma Hotakainen. He is also lovingly remembered by Lee’s twin daughters, Sydney and Everleigh Spencer who called Dexter “Papa”; along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Dexter was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Susan Paulson, and his wife, Cynthia Lynne Whitehead.
He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and never forgotten.
