David Hilmar Johansen

David Hilmar Johansen, 77, of Henning passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids, Minnesota under the gentle care of St. Joseph’s Hospice of Park Rapids.

David was born on June 10th 1948 in Washington D.C. the son of Hilmar and Aileen Johansen. After graduating school David enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he rose to the rank of sergeant. He carried himself with quiet pride and unwavering loyalty. David was known for his steady leadership, his discipline, and his willingness to shoulder responsibility without complaint. He was the kind of Marine who looked out for the men beside him, who did the work before anyone asked, and who treated honor and service as lifelong commitments, not chapters that ended when the uniform came off. He left a lasting impression on those who served with him and on those who knew him at home; trustworthy, steadfast, and always family first.

After his military service, David built a long and respected career as a structural welder and bridge builder. His craftsmanship could be seen in the steel and beams he helped raise, but also in the example he set; patient, hardworking, and dedicated to doing things the right way.

David was an avid outdoorsman. Whether sitting quietly in a deer stand or spending an afternoon near the water, he found peace and purpose in the outdoors. That was where he felt most himself.

Following his service David was united in marriage to Pamela Lengsfeld on September 29th, 1989in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. Pam and David built their life together in the Twin Cities, sharing countless road trips, memories, and moments along the North Shore. Lake Superior quickly became their happy place, a place they returned to often and cherished deeply.

Those left to honor David’s memory include his wife Pamela, daughters Jennifer and Dawn (Bryan) Pederson, his son Paul, and his grandchildren Jacob, Claudia (Peyton), Kaleb, Kamren, Finola & Freya McAnnany, Jacob R. & his great-grandchildren, Aubrey & Kaiser

David was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Penny & a grandson, Paul Jr.

Per David's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded & a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
