Dave Holmgren

David Henry Holmgren was born on October 15, 1932 in Henning, Minnesota.  His parents were the late Henry Nils and Stella Margarite (Hanson) Holmgren.  David graduated from the Henning High School with the class of 1950.  He served in the United States Air Force from October 8, 1952 to August 16, 1956 during that time David was united in marriage with Virginia Kay Horn on April 8, 1955.  During their first year of marriage, as David was stationed in France, they made their home near Paris, France. 

David and Virginia made their home in Minneapolis, St. Louis Park and Brooklyn Park for 32 years.  David graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1959 and received further graduated degrees from the U of M in 1965 & 1967.  After a successful teaching career in Osseo, Minnesota David and Virginia made their home in Henning, Minnesota. 

During his retirement in Henning, David served as Mayor from 1992 to 1995 and another term from 2002 to 2007.  He was instrumental in many improvements to the community with the Landmark Center, Henning’s new water tower, water treatment plant and Willow Creek.  He served on the Advisory Board for the Henning Medical Clinic, Clement Manor, Willow Creek and The Landmark Center and led the volunteer efforts to promote the Dollars for Scholars in the Henning Community and beyond. 

Virginia passed away on July 26, 2012.  David continued to enjoy the Henning Community as he would go for his daily walks no matter what the weather would bring.  On January 30, 2020 David passed away peacefully at his residence in Gorham, Maine at 87 years of age.  He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.  Preceding him in death were his parents, Henry and Stella Holmgren and his wife, Virginia Holmgren.

David is survived by his sons: Jeffrey (Becky) Holmgren; Karl Holmgren and Kurt (Lisa) Holmgren; 6 grandchildren: Brock, Michael, Derek, Brooke, Jacob and Kirsten; many other relatives and a host of friends.
