Viola Brutlag

Viola Dorothea Brutlag of Henning, MN passed away peacefully on December 28, 2018, at the age of 94. Vi, the daughter of George and Dorothea (Thalmann) Lueders, was born and raised in Ottertail, MN. Her strong faith began at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ottertail where she was baptized and confirmed. She attended St. John's parochial school through 8th grade and graduated from Perham High School in 1942. Before getting married, Vi worked as a secretary at the University of Minnesota and in Denver, CO.

On August 28, 1948 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Edgar Brutlag at St. John's Lutheran Church. They were blessed with 4 children, 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and an abundance of wonderful memories during their 67 years together. Ken and Vi owned and operated Ken's Market in Henning for 30 years. Vi taught Sunday School for many years and was very active at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, playing cards, and especially playing games with her grandchildren.

Grandma Vi had so much patience and would spend countless hours playing Monopoly and Shanghai Rummy, just to name a few. Vi was a talented cook and baker; family favorites included her German coffee cake, rhubarb crisp, caramel rolls, and apple pies. Following retirement, Vi and Ken were fortunate to spend 17 happy winters in Arizona with family and friends.

Vi was preceeded in death by her parents; her husband Ken; sisters: Leora (Ormand) True, Elverna (Charles) Blesi; brother Delbert (Ruth) Lueders; sister-in-law Arlette Carlson, brother-in-law Fred Shaw (Fritz); nephews: Robert Brutlag and Brent Brutlag.

She is survived by her children: Gerald (Jeanie) Brutlag, Steven (Sally) Brutlag, David (Nancy) Brutlag, Brenda (Randy) Flicek; grandchildren: Troy, Andy, Marc, Travis, Kristin, Laura, and Breanna; nine great grandchildren; brother Eldin (Marlys) Lueders, brothers-in-law: Donald (Lucy) Brutlag, Lowell (Audrey) Brutlag, and Ronald (Diane) Brutlag.
