Melanie “Mim” Rene Maas was born on April 21, 1958 in Bismarck, North Dakota to Carroll Jeanette (Huber) Maas and the late Emil Mass. She was baptized at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hazen, North Dakota and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wadena. Mim graduated from the Wadena High School with the class of 1976. After high school Mim attended University of Wisconsin-Superior where she graduated with a degree in journalism.
She made her home in Wadena where she was employed at the Wadena Pioneer Journal and became the local coordinator at the International Cultural Exchange Services in Wadena, where she enjoyed placing foreign exchange students. Among her many jobs, Mim was very involved with Brainerd Women’s Shelter, New York Mills Cultural Center and ran her own daycare center for years.
Mim was very active with the Wadena Mad Hatters Community Theatre and Magic where she would produce musicals, dinner theatres, and plays. She also enjoyed the garden club, the Democratic Party and never missed a day at Oma’s Bread downtown Wadena. Being involved in so many community events, Mim definitely touched many lives in everything she did.
On July 25, 2019 Mim passed away peacefully at the Regency Hospital in Golden Valley, Minnesota at 61 years of age. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Preceding Mim in death was her father, Emil Maas in 1994.
Mim is survived by her loving family, Mother, Carroll Maas of Wadena; sister, Candace (Larry) Pulju of Wadena; brothers: Curtis Maas of Wadena and Jim (Kim) Maas of Wadena; nieces & nephews: Stacey & Wayne Dykhoff; Corby Pulju; Zach & Lauren Maas; Halley Maas & fiancé, Garrett Trochman; great-nieces & nephews: Jake, Justin, Josh, Jenna, Jada Dykhoff; Vivian; many other relatives and friends.
