Floyd Severin Hansen was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on October 23, 1927 to Selmer and Anna (Fertig) Hansen. He attended school in Kennedy until his senior year of high school, when he transferred to the Hallock High School where he graduated with the class of 1945. Upon graduation, Floyd enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He honorably served in the occupation forces in Japan in World War II.
On June 18, 1950, Floyd was united in marriage to Hazel Nelson in Hallock, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Cindy, Pegi and Todd. In 1970, they moved to Wadena, Minnesota, where Floyd was employed at the Wadena Vocational Technical College. Though he held many positions over the years, Floyd was a salesman at heart. He loved talking to people and making a personal connection with everyone he met. He used these skills to sell everything from farm equipment to cars and matchbooks.
Floyd and Hazel eventually formed Hansen Advertising, an advertising and direct mail business, which they operated together. Following Hazel’s retirement from Wadena State Bank, they relocated, enjoying many years at their home on West Battle Lake before moving back to Wadena in 2004. Floyd and Hazel’s home was always the hub of the family, where four generations regularly gathered.
Floyd was a life-long learner. He earned a degree in Distributive Education from Moorhead State University in 1970. He had a passion for studying theology, history, philosophy and politics. Floyd loved nothing more than a good intellectual discussion. He deeply valued his roots and maintained contact with many friends and relatives over his lifetime. In recent years, Floyd developed an interest in cooking and regularly invited guests for meals at his home.
On June 17, 2019, Floyd passed away at his home in Wadena. Preceding him in death are his parents: Selmer and Anna Hansen; wife: Hazel Hansen; and son in-law: Mel Pulju.
Floyd is survived by his children: Cindy (Keath) Borchert of Wahpeton, ND; Pegi (Mel) Pulju of West Fargo, ND; and Todd (Jody Zimmermann) of Duluth, MN; sister, Lenyce (Lyle) Durbin; grandchildren, Kelly (Becca) Pulju; Josi (Michael) Schultz; Kasey (Ashley) Pulju; Kristin (Paul) Ide; Cara (Kyle) Nosek; Kevin and Britta Hansen; great grandchildren, Annika and Sofia Pulju, Allison and Alexis Schultz, Giselle and Amara Ide, Floyd, Sylas and Theodore Pulju; and many other friends and relatives.
