Dennis Edward Greenwaldt was born to Harry and Ella (Shafer) Greenwaldt on December 24, 1922 on a farm in rural Hewitt, MN.
Dennis grew up in the Bertha Hewitt area working on various family farms. Dennis graduated from Hewitt High school in 1941. He attended Business College in Fargo, ND until entering the Army in 1944 where he was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Dennis received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and 2-Oversees Service Bars. He was discharged in August of 1946 and worked at JC Penny's in Wadena where he met Arlene Marie Buntrock and they were married Feb. 23, 1947. In 1949, they began farming in the Ottertail and Henning areas. They were blessed with 5 sons: Dean, Terry, Bruce, Kevin and Ross.
Dennis and Arlene retired from farming in 1986 to their home on West Leaf Lake and he continued to help his son, Terry, farm when needed and they traveled extensively throughout the United States. In 1988, Arlene passed away and Dennis moved to an apartment in Henning in 2005 where he enjoyed baking cookies for friends, family and St. Paul's Church. During the last 15 years, he enjoyed a Canadian fishing trip, traveled back to Hawaii revisiting Pearl Harbor, toured Alaska and in 2006 he fulfilled a life-long dream of going on a successful elk hunt with sons, Dean and Kevin, and brother, Ted.
Dennis was active in the community and farm organizations. He served on the East Ottertail Soil and Water board for 5 years, was a board member of East Ottertail Farm Bureau, served on the Land-O-Lakes Creamery board. He was a member of the Lion's Club, a life-long member of the VFW and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he served as Head Usher, Elder and choir member for many years.
Dennis' hobbies included pitching horseshoes, dancing, hunting, playing the harmonica, and bowling, He was also an avid sports fan following his son's and grandchildren's various events for many years, as well as the Twins, Vikings, Gophers and many other sports.
Dennis passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at St. William’s Living Center in Parkers Prairie, MN. He will be dearly missed by all his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife Arlene and brothers: Harold, Ervin and Lyle.
Dennis is survived by his five sons: Dean (Lynn) of Battle Lake; Terry (Phyllis) of Henning; Bruce (Linda) of Burnsville; Kevin (Trista) of Henning; and Ross (Brenda) of Sauk Centre; six siblings: Glenn Greenwaldt of Deer Creek; Betty Buhl of San Juan Capistrano, CA; Eugene (Claudette) Greenwaldt of Hewitt; Ted Greenwaldt of Miltona; Verda (Wayne) Drager of Miltona; and Larry (Donna) Greenwaldt of Deer Creek; 14 grandchildren: Sean (Amy) Greenwaldt of Thousand Oaks, CA; Seth (Heidi) Greenwaldt of Plymouth; Stephanie (Paul) Brownlow of Verndale; Bradley (Tami) Greenwaldt of Raymond; Jason (Joy) Greenwaldt of Henning; Sara Crain of Denver, CO; Samantha Greenwaldt of Burnsville; Tyler Greenwaldt of Burnsville; PJ Neubauer of Mankato; Melissa Lembcke of Jordan; Jada Greenwaldt of Burnsville; Alisa (Josh) Staples of Alexandria; Maren Greenwaldt of Minneapolis and Madison Greenwaldt of Sauk Centre; 20 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
