Alvin D. Eckhoff was born on October 3, 1926 at home in Inman Township, rural Henning, Minnesota. He was the son of the late Christ and Margaret (Stapel) Eckhoff. Alvin was a student through the 8th grade at Spruce Lawn Country School and continued his education at Henning High School until 10th grade. He was confirmed in 1942 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Henning, MN. On December 19, 1950, Alvin married Jewell Mashek at a residence in Henning.
Alvin was always involved with farming. His family moved to the current family farm in 1932 and he farmed there with his two brothers until the late 1980s when he retired part time. He will be remembered by many for not being afraid of heights, especially when it came to some jobs on the farm. In retirement, Alvin and Jewell enjoyed traveling to Florida for six months of the year to avoid the Minnesota winters.
Among the many things he enjoyed were playing cards and shuffleboard, hunting, fishing, dancing, spending time with family and friends, telling stories and jokes. Alvin was a member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO), and had served as a trustee, elder and usher at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
On December 17, 2018, Alvin passed away in the care of Knute Nelson Hospice at his residence in Henning Rehab and Health Care, Henning, MN at the age of 92. Preceding Alvin in death were his parents and wife, Jewell.
He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his son: Rodney (Cheryl) Eckhoff of Shakopee; daughters: Jeane Bormann of West Fargo; Jane Snyder (Gene Sorenson) of Wadena; Lori (Kenneth) Gartzke of Fargo; 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; special friend: Dorothy Waskosky; sister-in-law: Donna Eckhoff of Tacoma, WA; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
